NEW MILLS
WW1 Soldiers buried in Derbyshire
The 4th August 2014 is the hundredth anniversary of the start of the First World War, during which approximately ten million military personnel died.  Most of the deaths were on the battlefields of Northern France and Belgium, but there were many who died closer to home.  In Derbyshire there are 982 WWI War Graves scattered over 157 Cemeteries and Graveyards.

In 1930 the then Imperial War Graves Commission compiled and published 'The War Graves Of The British Empire' The Register of the names of those who fell in the Great War and are buried in the Cemeteries and Churchyards in the Administrative County of Derby.  The list below is of those Cemeteries and Churchyards taken from that document in their administrative districts showing the number of Graves that each contain.

Some of the Cemeteries and Churchyards may no longer be in Derbyshire due to boundary changes that have taken place in the intervening years.  The administrative districts have also changed their names during that time.  Changes of land use have also closed some of them, the Derwent Woodlands (SS. James and John) Churchyard for instance now lies beneath the Ladybower dam reservoir, bodies from the graveyard were exhumed and reburied in Bamford.

To find the names of those buried in a particular Derbyshire Cemetery or Churchyard, or elsewhere go onto the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website
http://www.cwgc.org/find-a-cemetery.aspx and enter the relevant details.
They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
