proposed improvements to Bankside and Brookside
proposed improvements to Bankside and Brookside

In 1970 a plan was proposed to regenerate the the areas of Bankside and Brookside laid derelict by the slum clearances of the 1950's. It would have been quite some improvement on what has been for a generation an inaccessable wilderness. Why the well developed plans to install paths, benches and informal gravel and planted areas failed to materialise is unclear. But for forty years an area that might have been a beautiful asset to the town has lain undeveloped. Interestingly that neglect also means that some original walls and paths and garden plants can still be found.

Is it time now 60 years after the demolitions to act to preserve the ruins or to develop the Rocks as the slopes have become known?
